Japanese people live in an advanced country of KAWAII culture. Anything goes in pop culture, fashion, anime, video games, but fantasy and the occult are also a favorite. Not losing to China or France in regards to food quality, do you know about the unique restaurants that Japanese people find notable? Unique decorative interior, a menu that satisfies the eyes and mouth, friendly staff with individuality; today I’m going to introduce a new style of restaurant, a fusion of food and entertainment referred to as theme restaurants.
“KING OF THE PIRATES” showcases a pirate’s world view
Odaiba is another trendy spot like Shibuya and Harajuku, where you can find “KING OF THE PIRATES” in the landmark Aqua City Odaiba. True to the name, it’s a restaurant with a pirate theme. Inside is a pirate ship, a treasure chest, gold coins are scattered about and you are greeted at the entrance by staff impressively disguised as the ship’s captain and crew. Enter and enjoy a unique experience.
Heighten that pirate feeling with untamed dishes from unknown lands!
The menu is generally made up of dishes with unspecified origin. With a mixture of cuisine from different periods and places that pirates find during their voyages, it is sure to feel as if you are enjoying a break from a rough day at sea with ornamented skulls and a skillful practice with a saber. You can enjoy this pirate feeling to your hearts content by sinking your teeth into their signature dish of “12 herbs and spices rotisserie chicken” (full size 2,376 yen, half size 1,490 yen). The crispy outside and tender inside is sure to satisfy any gourmet palate.
Dinner time with that special person
You can’t talk about pirates without the ocean. The same goes for Odaiba. “KING OF THE PIRATES” is no exception. Seated on the open terrace you can enjoy a panoramic view of Tokyo Bay, the Rainbow Bridge, and Tokyo Tower. While it’s hard to tear yourself away from the pirate boat details, the terrace seating is where to be at night. With the moody, gorgeous night view and the busy ship hands (staff) making your food, you are well on your way to feeling like a pirate king.

Jump into the fairytale world of “Alice’s Fantasy Restaurant”
“Alice’s Fantasy Restaurant” is based on Lewis Carroll’s world famous book, “Alice in Wonderland”. There are seven locations within the city center, “Alice in Fantasy Book” (Shinjuku), “Alice in a Labyrinth” (Ginza), “Alice in the Silver Screen” (Nagoya) to name a few, each location has a different name and look. All represent the quirky world view of Alice, the staff also wear cute costumes.
Exquisite cuisine created by a first-class hotel chef
With a fantasy interior sure to be loved by girls and children, the food has to be just as lovable! The menu is supervised by a top class chef with experience in first-class hotels. Starting with “dry-aged meat and roasted vegetables” (1,706 yen), high skill level and carefully selected ingredients are sure to whet your appetite.
Make memories on your SNS with attractive sweets
Five of the city locations feature a refreshed winter menu with the keywords, “stylish lady” and “British style”. A restaurant specializing in photogenic sweets from the start, this new menu, “British style tea party set” (1,706 yen) is appreciated as being especially charming. Pictures of vivid cupcakes and fresh fruit are sure to brighten up your SNS.

Enjoy a bewitching time in a Vampire Count’s mansion at “VAMPIRE CAFÉ”
This occult “VAMPIRE CAFÉ” takes inspiration from a Vampire Count’s mansion with red velvet curtains, bats fluttering around chandeliers, and red blood cells rising up the corridor. The incredible interior delivers the first impact and was designed with participation of a famous designer, the staff costumes are just as impressive.
A staff totally immersed in the world view
First is the Rose Count (pictured), master of this mansion and the staff, who are whole-heartedly submerged in the gothic setting. Depending on the order, a vampire or servant will prepare your food at the table. “Would you like a salad made with an incantation?”
Casual French and Italian Cuisine Arranged in a Vampire Style
A chuck steak aged for a duration of 20 days through dry aging comprises the “skewered traitor – aged steak on skewers –” (2,030 yen) dish and others are sure to make classical gourmet groan. The atmosphere matched the unique naming and the elaborate arrangement all make for an interesting meal.

Hats off to Japan’s Amusement Immersion
Foreign culture such as pirates and vampires, etc. are interpreted humorously or more seriously in these restaurants. Providing entertainment while still maintaining attention to detail and quality food, you can catch a glimpse into the character of the Japanese society.
